Universitas Mahendradatta Denpasar didirikan pada tanggal 17 Januari 1963 berdasarkan SK Menteri Perguruan Tinggi dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Nomor 104 Tanggal 9 Agustus 1962 dan dikuatkan melalui SK Presiden Pertama Republik Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Sukarno yang akhirnya berhasil diwujudkan bersama sahabat perjuangannya dalam politik yakni (alm) Swargi Shri Wedastera Suyasa. Sejarah mencatat bahwa akibat situasi nasional di jaman Orde Baru, Universitas Marhaen berganti nama menjadi Universitas Mahendradatta.
